Charity Profile: The Coral Reef Alliance

Profile image for The Coral Reef Alliance

The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is a member-supported, non-profit organization, dedicated to protecting the health of coral reefs by integrating ecosystem management, sustainable tourism, and community partnerships.

CORAL:

* works with communities to identify and solve conservation challenges;
* changes attitudes and behavior through education and training;
* provides resources to strengthen marine protected areas; and
* creates incentives for sustainable tourism.

Coral reefs are one of nature's most magnificent creations—filled with thousands of unique and valuable plants and animals. Over one-quarter of all marine species depend on healthy coral reefs. Humans also depend on coral reefs. These marine ecosystems are the primary source of food and income for millions of people, a vast repository of valuable chemical compounds and medicines, and a natural wave barrier that protect beaches and coastlines from waves and storms.

In their modern form, coral reefs have thrived on earth for over 50 million years. In recent years, however, more than 20% of the world's reefs have been lost, and 50% of remaining reefs are in jeopardy of collapse if we do not take action now.

What is this?

Many authors generously donate a portion or all of their lesson proceeds to go to a particular charity.

That means you can learn something new and help out a good cause, all at the same time. Now, doesn't that feel nice?
