Ian Goldstone, a skate skier, talks about the sport of skate skiing. Skate skiing is different from traditional cross-country skiing (or Nordic skiing), as it is a combination of ice skating and cross-country skiing, propelling you forward with a side-to-side motion. Skate skis are slightly shorter than traditional nordic skis. Skate skiers stand on the edge of their skis and, rather than griping and gliding, they are gliding and edging. It is a good cross training and good cardiovascular workout, and allows cross-country skiers to cover more distance in a shorter amount of time. Thanks to this added speed, skate skiing is breathing new life into the sport of cross-country (or nordic) skiing.
