Lisa Bentley, a professional Triathlete, talks about the Ironman Triathlon. The Ironman started in Hawaii in 1980. There are over 20 Ironman competitions around the world. For women, the race lasts about 9 hours, so training has to be very long. Most people swim, bike, and run often to train for this endurance event, which includes a 2+ mile swim, a 112+ mile bike ride and a 26.2 mi run.
Nutrition is of utmost importance to ironman athletes. Eating the right balance of foods and the right amount of foods during training and then during the race can make the difference between winning and not finishing. Ironman competitions are so grueling that athletes are cautioned against racing more than four ironman races per year.
