In this lesson, Derek introduces us to female Canadian Olympic fencer Monique Kavelaars, who teaches us about the basics of the sport of fencing – a Fencing 101, if you will. There are three main types of competitions in fencing that differ based upon where you can hit your opponent for points and how you can hit your opponent for points: saber, epee, foil. In saber, you receive a point on your opponent by hitting your opponent from the waist up (with the side or the point of the blade). In foil, you can only use the tip of the blade and you have to hit in the torseau. In epee, you can only hit with the point of the blade, but you can hit anywhere on your opponents body. She also discusses the particulars of epee more briefly, her training program, and what gives someone an advantage in the sport.

This technique is part of the Body Noble Method, which is a safe,...
