Intro to Salsa: Basic Step & Variations On2

In this lesson you will learn the basic step in Salsa, danced on2, as well as a few variations such as the Sidebreak and the Crossing Sidebreak. In the basic step on2, the follower takes a small step forward with the right foot on the first beat of the measure while the leader takes a small step back with the left foot.
However the actual "break" or change of body direction happens on the second beat of the measure, hence why the dance is called "on2." On the second beat of the measure, the follower takes a step forward with the left foot while the leaders takes a step back with his right foot.

A word about Salsa Dance Styles

L.A. style (On1) and New York style (On2) are two of the most popular Salsa dance styles around the world. In the L.A style, the leader breaks forward with his left foot on the first beat of the measure while the follower breaks back with her right foot. In the New York style, the follower breaks forward with her left foot on the second beat of the measure while the leader breaks back with his right foot.

Once you feel comfortable dancing on one of these styles, you can easily translate your Salsa repertoire to the other style by following the "Timing Conversion Table" included as supplemental material with this video.
