This lesson is part of the series: Drumming Lessons-Advanced, Drumming Lessons: Basics through Advanced

You have already learned a bit about playing in different time signatures like 4/4, 6/8, 12/8, 3/4, 5/8, 7/8 etc. You might notice that some of the groups of 3 quavers have a feel actually more like one and a half crotchet beats. Try some of the tricky beats attached to this lesson - make sure you count properly as its easy to add an extra note or two just to make it feel comfortable (but it won’t be correct).

This lesson will help you become more familiar and capable when faced with different time signatures. To help with this process, Jim will walk you through several sample exercises that utilize varying time signatures.

Following the practice with time signatures, Jim will talk about using open versus closed notes on the high-hat. If we hit the high hat with the stick while the pedal is up, we will get a normal cymbal type of sound - this is what we call the “open” sound, and it is usually marked with a little “o” above the note. Usually the open note will only last a short time. When the high hat is closed again, it is marked with a “+” symbol.

This lesson is excerpted from a broader course available from www.begindrumming.com. The Begin Drumming course is a 100% comprehensive drumming course which takes you from absolute beginner to expert soloist without any gimmicky short cuts! Through a combination of video and written lessons, the course will teach you proper technique as well as how to read drum music.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Jim McCarthy. I'm a drum clinician and teacher and have specialized in pure technique for many years. I consider myself still a student as well, because I have a passion for constantly learning. I learn every day when I watch other drummers, and I analyze what works and what doesn’t. Performing, Educating and Learning have been my life and my living for well over 20 years.

I've had a tremendously broad background in drumming. I've played in rock bands, orchestras, marching bands - everything from high-brow contemporary music to Latin American stuff.

I spent six years at university studying percussion performance full time, and I ended up with a...
