This lesson is part of the series: Fundamentals of Photography - Film & Digital
In this lesson you will learn the differences between the two forms of photography media, film media and digital media, as well as how to control the media speed and color for both. It is vital to understand how to use both forms of media in order to take your photographs to the next level.
The saying goes “film is cheap, so shoot a lot of it.” Although film is not as cheap as it used to be, it is still one of the least expensive yet most important weapons in your arsenal and it is important to know how to use it correctly. This lesson will teach you the differences between the two basic types of film, positive film and negative film, and the advantages of using both. You will also understand the concept of color balancing and the best uses for indoor/outdoor film.
Today’s modern digital cameras convert the light reflected from your image into a digital format by using a sensor and an on-board computer. Memory cards are then used to store the digital information of your photographs. This lesson will explain how memory cards fit in to this process as well as describe the two basic types of memory cards, flash memory and microdrives, and how to correctly use them.
This lesson will also dive into some key concepts every photographer should know when using either film media or digital media. You will learn about the ISO rating system, which expresses the light sensitivity of your film or camera, as well as how to color balance your media, by either choosing tungsten or daylight film or white balancing your digital camera.
With the advent of inexpensive cameras, the world of photography was opened up to millions of image makers. This lesson is excerpted from the DVD Learn Photography, Film & Digital, which is an excellent resource for those looking to learn the fundamentals of photography. It is the third lesson cut from the DVD and includes Chapters 7, 8, and 9 (on Film Media, Digital Media, and Digital Speed and Color).
