This lesson is part of the series: Digital Darkroom - Digital Image Manipulation
The most obvious tool you need in your digital darkroom is a workable computer. Most digital photographers consider their computer to be a tool like any of the lenses or cameras they haul around. This lesson will walk you through the basics of computers while giving you advice on what requirements you should be looking to satisfy when picking out the computer that you'll be using to manipulate and output the images you capture with your camera.
Additionally, this lesson will explain how digital images are created. This understanding should inform you about how best to use your digital camera and digital darkroom tools.
In the digital darkroom, you have three steps. Importing images into your computer, editing images on your computer, and exporting or transferring your edited images for publishing, printing or storage. Brian will talk about each of these processes in turn. You can use many different devices and methods in converting and transferring digital images to your computer, and Brian will quickly review these. After importing the images, digital image files can be manipulated via different software applications. These applications can be used to produce slide shows, videos, digital art, web graphics, special effects and publications, but they can also be used for manipulating or editing the image. Once you're ready, your computer can export your digital information to devices as simple as your desk top printer or as complex as a commercial printer half way around the world. Other lessons created by Brian will cover the printing of images, but images are often exported in other ways.
The darkroom is the starting point for learning the fundamentals of digital image manipulation. This lesson is excerpted from the DVD, Digital Photography: The Darkroom, which is an excellent resource for those looking to learn the fundamentals of digital image manipulation.
This is the last segment cut from the DVD and includes chapters 1, 2 and 3 (providing a brief introduction and covering Computers, & Digital Pathways).
