This lesson is part of the series: Fundamentals of Digital Photography
Depth of field is one of the most important tools a photographer has because it allows you to control the finished look of your picture by identifying what ranges of the field depth will be in sharp focus, in acceptable focus and out of focus. Varying your aperture leads to variance of your depth of field, the range of depths that are in acceptable focus in your finished picture. Depth of field is also impacted by the focal length of your lens settings, the size of your image sensor. Brian will explain how depth of field will vary across different lens types (e.g. wide angle vs telephoto).
Brian will also help you to understand when which amount of depth of field is most appealing from a composition standpoint. He also covers use of the Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority shooting modes, F-stops, shutter speed, etc
In addition to depth of field, this lesson talks about the pros and cons of using film versus digital. Film and digital record light volume and quality differently, so the results are going to be different when using one instead of the other.
Digital photography is changing the way photographers create images with a new sense of imagination. Digital pictures are more than instant images as they can be instantly changed and improved.
This lesson is excerpted from the DVD, Digital Photography: The Camera, which is an excellent resource for those looking to learn the fundamentals of digital photography.
This is a segment cut from the DVD and includes chapters 10 and 11 (covering Depth of Field & When to Use Digital).
