This lesson is part of the series: Photographic Critique - Film & Digital

Powerful images are all around us, but most of the time we just don’t see them. The secret is learning how to see these images ‘photographically’. In this lesson, Brian will talk about seeing images (to photograph), editing photographs to optimally capture images, and photographing people.

The process of editing images is critical to your professional reputation and growth with your ‘artistic’ capabilities. Seeing images is equally important, however. To hone your ability to 'see images,' Brian recommends several fascinating techniques and approaches that are guaranteed to tune you into images and help you better critique. Critiquing photography, especially your own, is critical in improving your image making capabilities. This process of learning to critique photography is also referred to as learning to see ‘photographically’.

After talking about critiquing and seeing images, Brian moves on to give instruction specifically on photographic people. Standing face-to-face with a person you’re about to photograph can be intimidating. He reminds you that a good photographer takes command and gives direction. He also gives advice on how subjects should be captured in the photograph, and how light should be used for the image, how framing can add interest to an ordinary subject. When shooting people, Brian reminds us that we, first and foremost, need to focus on lighting, focus, and composition.... and on the subject's eyes, which really are the windows to his character.

To be successful, a photographer must learn how to properly critique photography in order to improve their image-making capabilities. This lesson is excerpted from the DVD, Learn to Critique Photography, which is an excellent resource for those looking to learn how to critique photography, both their own and that of others. This is a segment cut from the DVD and includes chapters 6 and 7 (covering seeing images and people photography).
