This lesson is part of the series: Digital Darkroom - Digital Image Manipulation

This lesson will walk you through printers, papers and ink before moving on to a discussion on how to work with image files.

Getting a good print has always been a critical challenge for photographers. In the digital darkroom, creating an outstanding print can still be a challenge, but because of today’s computer and printer technologies, every photographer has the chance to craft beautiful prints. This lesson will get you on that path.

It covers everything from pros and cons of different types of printers (inkjet vs laser, 4-color vs 6-color, etc), paper and ink preferences for different printers (type, weight, whiteness, gloss), file size and resolution requirements and considerations, and paper selection for various image types (in terms of whitness, gloss, etc).

Once your images are completed on your computer you can do all sorts of things with them. The final output is only limited by your imagination. Given the large size of some image files, Brian gives some advice on external storage options to augment the storage capacity of your hard drive. He also talks about the intricacies (file format, considerations, etc) of emailing pictures and displaying them online

Last, Brian talks a bit about how best to preserve your photos or use them in slideshows.

The darkroom is the starting point for learning the fundamentals of digital image manipulation. This lesson is excerpted from the DVD, Digital Photography: The Darkroom, which is an excellent resource for those looking to learn the fundamentals of digital image manipulation.

This is the last segment cut from the DVD and includes chapters 8, 9 and 10 (covering Printers, Paper & Ink, Working With Image Files, and The Finishing Room).
