This lesson will teach you how to properly identify home safety concerns. These concerns include building materials that have come to be recognized as dangerous, naturally occurring chemicals to be avoided, and design elements that can greatly reduce safety risks.
Some building materials that were commonly used but have now been recognized as dangerous are asbestos, lead paint, and formaldehyde. You will learn what the properties of these substance are, their health risks, and how to remove them from your home.
You will also learn about naturally occurring radon and carbon monoxide gasses that are hazardous. Learn where these gasses originate, and how to determine if they are in your home.
Finally, you will learn about design features that should be in place to keep your home safe, such as guard railing, GFCI outlets, and smoke detectors. You will learn what the dimensions of your stairs and guard rails should be, and how often you should test GFCI outlets and smoke detectors.
