This lesson is one in a series from the Lone Star Ruby Conference Charity Workshop held in Austin, TX on September 6, 2007.

In this talk, Marcel Molina, Jr., takes the audience through many examples of the beauty he finds in the Ruby programming language.

Marcel is a language enthusiast who went from being a literature major to a programmer. In his transition from natural language to machine language he found Ruby an elegant balance of dynamic, pragmatic and "humane".

Author proceeds from this video will be donated to charity.

The Lone Star Ruby Conference 2007 team offered an evening session in advance of the conference. Workshop attendees were requested to make a $50 donation to one of five charities. Speakers included: Hal Fulton, James Edward Gray II, Bret Pettichord, Marcel Molina, Jr., Bruce Tate, Bruce Williams, Rick Olson, and Robert Rasmussen. These presentations were filmed and are being offered for sale through MindBites with all author proceeds being split between the five chosen charities:

Matt rated 5 out of 5 Interesting survey of the dynamism of Ruby 03/15/2008 ~ matt

Pretty much Marcel is showing examples of just how dynamic Ruby really is through extreme cases. Most of this stuff you would never use, but I found it really helpful to think about the borders of the language and the way that Ruby blurs them.

This is probably not for you unless you are a language geek or interested in Ruby meta-programming, but if you are, this is awesome.

Marcel is a Rails core team contributor and it's obvious why. He covers some interesting edge cases of Ruby syntax and shows us with code the possibilities of metaprogramming. Definitely beats reading a blog entry or book!
