3 Lessons
An interview with myself:
1. What do you do (when you're not filming MB videos)?
I’m training for my first Ironman 70.3 triathlon in about 6 weeks. I give swim lessons 1-on-1 to triathletes, primarily excellent runner/cyclists struggling with the swim or trying to improve their time on it.
I’ve been free diving lately too, to relax and because there are lots of fish in the lake I swim in that hang out near a submerged car about 30 – 50 feet underwater.
2. When and how did you learn whatever it is you're an expert at?
I learned to swim at an early age, with my mother putting me on a swim team at 7 years old. I swam competitions up to 1000 m that year.
I do swims of between 3 and 9 miles several times a week in quarry lake. I was on the Team Texas masters team last year. They really improved me, I learned a lot by watching and imitating, you know? They were some of the fastest people I’d been in the water at a practice with. The coaches were excellent. I’m being trained 1-on-1 by my masters swim team coach now.
3. What do you think qualifies you to teach the lessons you do?
I’ve had success teaching swimming 1-on-1 to non-swimmers and improving swimming performance in triathletes. I’m competitive as a swimmer, and at my first triathlon, I finished without discomfort or injury with a swim ranking of 94/833.
4. What appeals to you about MindBites?
I think it’s a great tool because these days it seems everybody looks online first to figure things out.
5. What are you interested in learning from the MindBites community (that's uploaded now or isn't provided yet)?
I would like to watch a “How to relax†video. Mindbites has really useful videos like “How to change a flat tire on a bike.â€
6. What advice would you offer to first-time authors?
First-time authors, relax!
7. What were the easiest and hardest parts of making your first MindBite?
The easiest part of making a mindbite was working with the guys filming and editing it. The hardest part was trying not to get the sun in my eyes when we filmed outdoors.
8. Do you promote your lessons? To whom and how? What's worked for you?
I do promote my lessons with a link in my craigslist ad for 1-on-1 swim lessons from non-swimmers to triathletes.
9. If you could have any superpower you wanted, what would it be and why?
My superpower would be flying. I always wished I could do that.
10. What's your favorite piece of gear related to your area of expertise?
Polarized metallic Speedo googles, definitely. They cut the glare right off the lake surface when you’re swimming in it. They’re like sunglasses for swimmers.
