Below are the descriptions for each of the lessons included in the series:
-
Drum Lesson 21 - Stroke Technique
In this drum lesson we are looking at stroke technique which is something drummers need to think about when practicing but this drum technique should come naturally when performing.
Stroke technique allows us to have more fluidity around the drum kit as we will naturally have the drum sticks at the correct height for the next note - there are four main stroke techniques (full, down, tap and up) and these allow for either quiet notes or loud notes on any drum - if played on the snare drum a tap stroke would be used for a ghost note.

Drum Lesson 22 - Fat-Back Grooves 1-4
In this drum lesson we are looking at fat back grooves which are exercises that allow drummers to play tight and more accurate notes on any drum. We are focussing on the bass drum in this drum lesson.
Playing quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes on the hi hats and the snare drum on beats 2+4. The bass drum is displaced a sixteenth note each time so our bass drum will be on the same notes in beats 1+3.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 23 - Fat-Back Grooves 5-8
In this drum lesson we are looking at more fat back grooves. As drummers we need to play very solid and make sure our notes all line up where they should do - practicing fat back grooves will help to make sure our groove really grooves.
we are looking at playing our bass drum in beats 1+3 while our snare drum plays the 2+4 while playing quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes on the hi hats - we are displacing the bass drum a sixteenth note in each exercise.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 24 - Fat-Back Grooves 9-12
In this drum lesson we are looking at more fat back groove exercises - practicing fat back grooves as a drum kit exercise will make our drum grooving much more solid as we are practicing to ensure the notes we play on our bass drum line up perfectly.
Playing quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes on the hi hats and our snare drum on beats 2+4. The bass drum is played in beats 1+3 and is displaced by a sixteenth note in each drum exercise.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 25 - 16th Note Fat-back Grooves 1-12
In this drum lesson we are playing all of our fat back grooves back to back. First of all playing four bars of each, then two bars of each and then one bar of each.
Playing sixteenth notes hand to hand on the hi hats in each drum example and our snare drum on beats 2+4. The bass drum is accurately played on twelve different points within a beat of sixteenth notes in beats 1+3.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 26 - Hi Hat Idea's 1
In this drum lesson we are playing a groove and focusing on hi hat accents. When drummers accent the hi hats they don't simply hit harder they use a different part of the drum stick, playing with the shoulder of the drum stick instead of the tip and using moeller technique creates a louder sound.
We are playing eighth notes, sixteenth notes with the leading hand and sixteenth notes hand to hand on the hi hats and playing even accents. Accenting some notes on the hi hats will make grooves much more colourful.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 27 - Hi Hat Accent Idea's 2
In this drum lesson we are looking at playing the sixteenth note hi hats with more dynamics by using various parts of the drum stick. We are accenting the hi hats using moeller technique on different sixteenth notes.
Once we can play our drum grooves with various hi hat accents we, as drummers, need to do the same with more complicated grooves and still control our dynamic sound. moeller technique and stroke technique are drum techniques used for accenting hi hats.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 28 - Trip Hop Grooves
In this drum lesson we are playing trip hop drum grooves. Playing eighth notes and quarter notes on the hi hats with plenty of off beat bass drum and snare drum notes.
We need to keep the hi hats even and the bass drum and snare drum notes that are off the beat should fall accurately on the eighth or sixteenth note - practicing fat back grooves will help achieve this.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 29 - RnB Grooves
In this drum lesson we are playing RnB grooves. The hi hats are not even as we are playing a mixture of eighth notes and sixteenth notes - broken sixteenths.
Playing RnB grooves on the drum kit can be quite challenging but is great for independence as drummers can play the bass drum and snare drum notes in different places in the bar but keeping the hi hat pattern the same.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 30 - House Grooves
In this drum lesson we are playing house grooves on the drum kit. Keeping the hi hats even but not always on the quarter note - the hi hats are usually on the '+' of each drum beat.
House grooves often have groups of three or more snare drum notes in a row which can be difficult to play at fast tempos. The bass drum is played mainly on the quarter note.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 31 - Funk Studies 2
In this drum lesson we are playing further funk drum grooves. The hi hats are accented on the quarter note of each beat using moeller technique, this will give us a louder hi hat sound from the drum kit on each pulse.
Adding ghost notes on the snare drum as single sixteenth notes and double stroke ghost notes as sixteenth note triplets. The bass drum is playing on and off the beat and we are also opening the hi hats in some places.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 32 - Sub-Divisions Single Strokes
In this drum lesson we are looking at sub-divissions, having the ability to divide the pulse or tempo into an even amount of notes. Playing single strokes on the snare drum and keeping the hi hat on the quarter note with the foot.
When playing single strokes through odd sub-divisions of three, five and seven notes the hi hat unison will alternate between right and left hand.
-
Drum Lesson 33 - 8th Note Triplet Combinations
In this drum lesson we are looking at sixteen eighth note triplet combinations. Keeping the hi hat on the quarter note all the time and using both hands and the bass drum.
We need to keep an even flow of notes - playing between snare drum and bass drum and then improvising around the drum kit.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 34 - 8th Note Triplet Fill Idea's 1
In this drum lesson we are playing two bar phrases - keeping the hi hat on the quarter note and playing eighth note triplet fills between snare drum and bass drum and then improvised around the drum kit.
The drum fills change each time and we need to make sure whichever sound source is played on the quarter note is exactly in unison with the hi hat.
-
Drum Lesson 35 - 8th Note Triplet Fill Idea's 2
In this drum lesson we are looking at various eighth note triplet fills phrasing groupings of four notes. Playing two bar phrases and keeping the hi hat on the quarter note when playing the grooves and the fills.
Playing the drum fills between snare drum and bass drum and then improvising the same sticking around the drum kit to get used to different sounds - sound affects coordination!
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 36 - 8th Note Triplet Fill Idea's 3
In this drum lesson we are looking at phrasing groups of six notes through eighth note triplets. Playing two bar phrases - a drum groove followed by a drum fill and always playing the hi hat on the quarter note.
Playing the drum fills between snare drum and bass drum and then improvising around the drum kit.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -

Drum Lesson 51 - Basic Implied Metric Modulation 1
In this drum lesson we are looking at basic implied metric modulation - this means we are implying a new tempo. Drummers can imply a new tempo in a number of ways - we can play our downbeat and backbeat, our bass drum and snare drum, with various hi hat spacings - so every 2 hi hats or every 3 hi hats and so on.
By doing this at a certain point in a song we can influence the audience to feel a different tempo but all the time the band should know how to easily get back to the original tempo.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 52 - 16th Unison Exercise 1 - Singles
In this drum lesson we are playing a sixteenth note unison exercise. Playing single strokes as our rudiment on the snare drum and always keeping the hi hat on the quarter note. We are changing the bass drum in each exercise to play in unison with the snare drum on a single sixteenth note or on two sixteenth notes.
When comfortable with this exercise try to add accents to the single strokes while keeping the sixteenth notes even - using moeller technique and stroke technique.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 53 - 16th Unison Exercise 2 - Singles
In this drum lesson we are playing a sixteenth note unison exercise. Playing single strokes as our rudiment on the snare drum and always keeping the hi hat on the quarter note. We are changing the bass drum in each exercise to play in unison with the snare drum on a single sixteenth note or on two sixteenth notes.
When comfortable with this exercise try to add accents to the single strokes while keeping the sixteenth notes even - using moeller technique and stroke technique to achieve the best possible fluidity and dynamics.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 54 - 16th Note Ghost Notes
In this drum lesson we are playing three and four way coordination adding ghost notes to our groove. Playing eighth notes on the hi hats and playing ghost notes on various sixteenth notes.
Dynamics is the key and having the drum sticks at the correct height will help with this. We should use stroke technique and moeller technique in this lesson.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 55 - Groove Progression 1
In this drum lesson we are looking at a practicing concept called groove progression. Practicing a basic groove and focusing on technique and fluidity - once we have the muscle memory to play each exercise without too much thought we add a couple of notes on any sound source of the drum kit.
Drummers can end up playing some very difficult drum grooves and drum fills by gradually building the groove or fill in this way from a basic pattern.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 56 - Blues 2
In this drum lesson we are playing a blues groove using hi hats, snare drum and bass drum. Using moeller technique to create a quarter note accent on the hi hats.
Playing groups of two or three notes in each drum beat between the snare drum and bass drum and counting 1 trip let, 2 trip let, 3 trip let, 4 trip let to ensure the notes are playing with accuracy.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 57 - Blues 3
In this drum lesson we are playing some polyrhythms within our blues grooves. Using moeller technique to obtain an even quarter note hi hat accent. Our snare drum and bass drum is playing at even points either two or four eighth note triplets apart.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -

Playing various ride cymbal patterns and playing a 3/2 and 2/3 clave' on the snare drum.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 60 - Latin - Samba 2
In this drum lesson we are playing various samba snare drum patterns. Playing groups of three sixteenth notes on the ride cymbal and keeping the hi hat on the '+' of each beat and the bass drum on the first and last sixteenth note of each beat.
Once comfortable with these snare drum patterns take a look at the PDF notation for two more ride cymbal patterns to try with the same snare drum patterns.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 61 - Latin - Samba 3
In this drum lesson we are playing a samba groove and incorporating a cascara pattern on the snare drum. Starting with eighth notes on the ride cymbal against the cascara pattern to get comfortable with the hand pattern - then working through the exercises to play the final pattern.
Also playing a sixteenth note samba pattern between snare drum and floor tom with the same samba foot ostinato.
http://www.dansdrumlessons.com -
Drum Lesson 62 - Jazz Introduction
In this drum lesson we are looking at an introduction to jazz drumming. Playing a basic jazz ride cymbal pattern with the hi hats on beats 2+4 - also adding the bass drum at certain points in the groove.
We are then playing two 4 bar phrases - 3 bars of a jazz groove with ghost notes and then two fills through eighth note triplets always keeping the same hi hat pattern.
