Once you've mastered the basics of graphing sine and cosine functions, it's time to move on to the other trig functions: tangent, cotangent, cosecant, and secant. In this three lesson series, we'll work on graphing these functions.

We'll start by deriving the graphs of each of these functions based upon their relationship to the sine and cosine functions (and the graphs of those functions that we've already learned). Next, we'll look at how coefficients impact the graphs of these functions - whether they are in the argument or preceding the trig function. Last, we'll take a turn at identifying a graphed trig function by its graph. To do this, we'll learn a technique by which we'll sketch the reciprocal graph to help us identify the original graph (and learn that asymptotes turn into zeros in reciprocal graphs - and vice-versa).

Taught by Professor Edward Burger, this bundle of lessons was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Trigonometry. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. The full course can be found at The full course covers an algebra review, trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, applications of trig, complex numbers, polar coordinates, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, conic sections, and more.
