In these 35 biology lessons, we'll learn about molecular genetics. We'll begin our study with five lessons on DNA, an overview of molecular genetics (and the protein versus DNA debate), links between genes and chemicals (courtesy of work by Muller, Beadle and Tatum), transformation (Griffith's work), and work establishing DNA that was done by Avery, MacLeod, McCarty, Hershey, Chase, Chargaff, Franklin and Wilkins. Next, we'll look at the double-helix DNA structure and learn about how Watson and Crick were able to piece together clues to understand how DNA is structured.

Then, we'll go through two lessons that will introduce us to DNA replication. This will start out with a look at Meselson and Stahl's early work on Replication and then transition to cover polymerization with triphosphate nucleotides. The next five lessons we go through will cover events that take place during DNA replication. We'll start with events at the replication fork, the leading strand, and the lagging strand. You'll also learn about proofreading, end replication and telomeres.

Our next nine lessons will cover both transcription and translation. As part of this, we'll learn about RNA formulation from the DNA template, termination and RNA protection, post-transcriptional modification and RNA splicing, ribosomal and transfer RNA (rRNA and tRNA), the roles of different types of RNA, initiation events and elongation.

Next, we'll review protein synthesis starting with a look at polypeptide destinations and a general overview of protein synthesis. This will take us up to three lessons on the Iac Operon. In addition to Control Mechanisms, we'll also look at Jacob and Monod's model of the Iac Operon. These lessons will be followed by four lessons on eukaryotic genomic organization that cover DNA Packing, repetitive DNA, gene families, transposons and amplified genes.

Our final three lessons will look at controlling eukaryote protein synthesis starting with a look at transcriptional controls and posttranscriptional and posttranslational controls. Last, we'll look at prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

I love the enthusiasm in this tutorial, it helped catch and keep my interest throughout. No mean feat at the moment as I am nursing a headcold and have the concentration of a goldfish, but this tutorial still managed to help me get my foggy head around the subject where my text book couldn't. The only reason it didn't score a five was because it left me hanging at the end...I hate movies that end on cliffhangers ;P ! Suppose I shall just have to purchase the next installment then, great sales technique!

In the video, the instructor emphasizes that polymerase reads in the 3' to the 5' direction, however, all known polymerases synthesize DNA in the 5' to 3' direction; one strand only APPEARS to grow in the 3'-5' direction. Other than that, this is an excellent video and seriously aids in understanding a complex subject.
