The Internet
Learn about the invention of The Internet with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The story of the Internet begins in the early 1960s, when Russia launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial earth satellite. Afraid of the technological potential of the Russians, the United States Department of Defense formed the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), in order to develop US science and technology, and in particular its application in the military.
In order to share information between different US military and research institutions, a network was established between different computers. A government agency called RAND developed the idea of a decentralized network - so if one location was attacked, the others would still be able to connect to each other.

Route 66
Learn about Route 66 with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Route 66 is arguably the most famous road in the United States of America. Stretching 2448 miles across much of the country, from Chicago in the East to Los Angeles in the West, it was also America's longest road. As it wound its way across the remarkable scenery of America, Route 66 originally passed through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
In the early 1920s, entrepreneurs Cyrus Avery and John Woodruff conceived the idea of building a massive highway that linked Chicago to Los Angeles. Their inspiration sprung from the changing needs of the American people.

Deja Vu
Learn about the feeling of Déjà Vu with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
When Charles Dickens wrote in his 1850 novel David Copperfield about ‘a feeling, that comes over us occasionally, of what we are saying and doing having been said and done before’, he may well have been referring to the experience of déjà vu. When the popstar Madonna took the lead role in the 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, her character referred to her emerging snippets of memory after a head injury as exactly that. But even if it feels like you have experienced something before, is this always an experience of déjà vu?

Eternal Truths
Learn the philosophy of the Eternal Truths with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
‘Eternal truths’ are ideas that are not proved or demonstrated, but are nonetheless believed due to their apparent self-evidence. Acceptance of such facts is believed to come about through reason. Those who believe in eternal truths define them as ideas or statements so undeniable that proof is unnecessary. For example, the sentence, “I think, therefore I am”, is an eternal truth, as no further proof of existence is required. The very fact that we think, shows that we exist.
One of the foremost European scholars of the Enlightenment was René Descartes, who lived from 1596 until 1650. Descartes wrote extensively on eternal truths, and laid the foundation for many scholars to follow.

l'esprit de l'escalier
Learn about the feeling of l'Esprit de l'Escalier with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
There’s nothing like a good comeback. It’s witty, snappy and completely devastating to your verbal sparring partner. A woman once said to US President Calvin Coolidge: “I’ve made a bet with a friend that I can get you to say at least three words to me this evening. What do you have to say to that?” Coolidge looked at her and calmly replied: “You lose.”
But how many times have you gone completely blank when arguing with someone, only to think of the perfect comeback an hour later? It’s too late, of course. More than anything, you wish you could wind back time and deliver your riposte at the perfect moment. That’s l’esprit de l’escalier.

Murphy's Law
Learn about Murphy's Law with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Murphy's Law is a tongue-in-cheek and rather pessimistic adage of eight simple words: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. The translation of these words into "Murphy's Law" was in honour of US aerospace engineer Edward Aloysius Murphy Junior. Legend has it that in 1949 Murphy made an offhand comment to his colleagues while working at an Air Force Base in California. His team was testing human tolerance for g-forces during rapid deceleration. The experiments involved Air Force officer John Stapp being strapped into a sled moving at great speed. As the sled decelerated, an instrument was supposed to take readings of the g-forces Stapp experienced.Perfect to listen to while commuting, exercising, shopping or cleaning the house.. iMinds brings knowledge to your MP3 with 8 minute information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

International Criminal Tribunals
Learn about the International Criminal Tribunals with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The concept of prosecuting war criminals is not unique to the modern world. Individuals who breached the “rules of war” were tried in Ancient Greece, and probably earlier. However, those early prosecutions were carried out by national courts, generally by victors against the vanquished, and so could hardly be described as examples of fair and impartial international justice.
Underpinning the prosecutions was a notion that, even in war, there are certain rules which must be obeyed. The first notable international attempt to codify these “rules of war” was the Geneva Convention of 1864, followed by the Hague conventions in 1899 and 1907.

The Dropa Stones
Learn about the mystery of the Dropa Stones with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The Dropa Stones are supposedly a collection of circular stones found in a cave in Tibet in 1938. They were discovered by Chinese archaeologist Chi Pu Tei. They purportedly tell of aliens coming to earth in 10,000 BC. No claims have been verified, and so the Dropa Stones are part of a highly elusive mystery.
High in the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains in Western China, Chi Pu Tei led a group of students on an expedition surveying interlinking caves in the Himalayas. The caves were apparently remarkable in that they appeared to have been carved using a technically-advanced cutter.

Behavioral Economics
Learn about Behavioral Economics with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
According to most economics textbooks, human beings are super-rational creatures who know what is in their own best interests and always act accordingly. When making a decision to buy something, the rational consumer will evaluate all the possible alternatives before making a purchase, having already conducted research on the state of the market. They would not buy something on the spur of the moment, or on the recommendation of a friend. Nor would a rational consumer be unduly influenced by advertising or a brand name in making purchasing decisions. This explanation of human behavior is known as the rational agent model. Sound realistic?

Learn the history of Fireworks with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
A Chinese book from 850 CE, called Classified Essentials of the Mysterious Tao of the True Origin of Things, warns the reader that if sulphur, realgar and saltpetre are heated with honey, they produce smoke and flames.
Thus begins the history of artificially made fire. Taoism permeates every facet of Chinese society. Lao Tzu introduced Taoist thought in the sixth-century BCE as a purely philosophical discipline. Its centrality to Chinese society led it to have an effect on all intellectual pursuits, including alchemy, which led to the development of gunpowder in the eighth-century CE and, subsequently, fireworks as we know them today.

The Triple Crown is the most esteemed horse racing trophy in North America. The Triple Crown trophy was introduced in 1930 after a journalist suggested that Gallant Fox's triumph in America's three biggest horse races, the Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, deserved a trophy of its own. He suggested the name, the Triple Crown, after the British Triple Crown trophy.
In Britain, a horse must win the St. Leger Stakes, the Epsom Derby and the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes to collect the Triple Crown.

The Davis Cup weighs more than 100 kilograms, is over one metre tall, and is the world's oldest sports trophy. It has been filled with champagne in Paris nightclubs, stolen in Peru, and locked in bank vaults during world wars. These days, it is sought after by more than 100 countries every year and known to many as the "holy grail" of men's tennis. The Davis Cup tournament started in 1889 when four Harvard students decided to test their tennis skills against players in Britain. The prize was neither money nor fame, but simply a silver trophy.

Climbing Everest
Learn about Climbing Everest with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Mount Everest is situated in the Himalayan Mountains, on the border between Nepal and Tibet. It is the tallest mountain in the world, standing roughly 29,029 feet above sea level. Every year, Mount Everest gets taller by about half an inch. This is due to movements in the Earth’s crust and two tectonic plates, deep beneath the Earth’s surface, pushing together. The name “Himalaya” means “home of snow”, but snow is only one of the many challenges faced by a climber of Mount Everest.
The danger with snow is that there is always the risk of an avalanche. Snow, ice and rocks can slide down the mountain at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. Temperature is also a concern.

Learn about the sport of Parkour with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
If there was only one way to describe parkour, it would be to call it a sport. Parkour involves the task of overcoming obstacles, both physical and mental. But not everybody is in agreement with what parkour is truly about. What we do know is that parkour originated in France where it is sometimes referred to as “l’art du déplacement” meaning “the art of displacement”. The basic principle of parkour is to use only the human body to move from point A to point B in the most efficient, direct and fluid way possible.

Meteorites
Learn about the science of Meteorites with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
A meteorite is a mass of stone or metal which has reached the earth’s surface from outer space. There are various names for a meteorite depending on where it is situated. While it is traveling in space, it is referred to as a “meteoroid”. When it passes through the earth’s atmosphere and produces a fiery streak in the sky, known as a “shooting star”, it is called a “meteor”.
Because meteorites formed from the dust present during the creation of the solar system, they are on average around 4.5 billion years old. Their composition is, therefore, a record of past geologic processes which occurred while they were still part of their parent asteroid.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Learn about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
In 1997, a Californian man named Charles Moore was sailing home from Hawaii after competing in a boat race. On a whim, he decided to change course and head through a part of the eastern Pacific Ocean known as the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Known to seafarers as "the doldrums", this is an area of light or no wind and little boat traffic. Its calm weather is due to a permanent column of high pressure air, which causes the ocean for hundreds of miles across to swirl slowly towards its centre.

Wind Power
Learn about the science of Wind Power with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Wind power is a limitless, non-polluting resource that currently contributes almost 2% of the world's energy supply. It's the fastest-growing resource market in the world and has become one of the biggest issues in the green movement. Importantly, there’s enough of it in the atmosphere to meet the daily global energy demand five times over!
But what is wind? In fact, it is the sun's heat and the earth's varied surfaces that create wind. When the sun's rays hit the earth, the north and south poles receive less heat than the equator because of their angle to the sun.

Evolution
Learn about the theory of Evolution with iMindsJNR audio learning series for younger minds.
Evolution is a theory which explains how life on Earth developed. At its heart, it proposes that all species, including human beings, are formed by way of a gradual process of mutation from other species. According to this theory, humans are related to gorillas and reptiles because they share common ancestors. They are like distant cousins with the same grandparents. The important difference is that millions of generations separate them! Amazingly, evolutionary theory even suggests that we share a common ancestor with all organisms on earth.

When the Cold War was at its height in the 1950s and 1960s, the US and Russia were fierce rivals. On 12 April 1961, Russia won! And the astronaut Yuri Gargarin went down in history as the first person to make it into space.
That same year, John F Kennedy became President of the United States. NASA’s Administrator, James Webb, was like a breath of fresh air for JFK, helping to stir up enthusiasm for an American moon-landing.

In any urban setting throughout the world today, you can expect to see examples of stencil art. Aurora Borealis
Learn about the science of the Aurora Borealis with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The aurora borealis, often referred to as the northern lights, is a natural light-show that appears in the sky around the north magnetic pole. Auroras can sometimes be seen in other places of the world, but not as clearly. In the southern hemisphere, the phenomenon is called “aurora australis”.
The aurora borealis occurs because of an interaction between solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. When the sun’s gases explode, some of the particles are blown away in a phenomenon known as solar wind. The particles in the solar wind travel at speeds of over 600,000 miles per hour and take two to three days to reach the Earth.

US Federal Reserve
Learn about the US Federal Reserve with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The US Federal Reserve is stirring more excitement these days than is probably recommended for a central bank just shy of its 100th birthday.
The Fed, tasked with fostering economic growth and price stability in the US, was ratified by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. It followed two failed attempts, and two hundred years of boom and bust in what was to rapidly become the world’s leading economy. The Fed's own lifetime has been scarcely less eventful. And today it tackles the gravest in a long line of crises that, for better and worse, have helped shape the US financial environment.

It is said that when Joan of Arc was born on 6 January in 1412, the roosters in her village all crowed, even though it was midnight.
When Joan was 13 years old, something happened to change her life. She was working in the garden when she thought she saw a bright light coming from the church, and heard someone speaking French in a sweet, low, beautiful voice. The voice told her it was the angel Saint Michael, and that he had a message from God. He told her she had a great mission to fulfill, and that she would be the one to save France.

Lobbying
Learn about Lobbying with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
In a perfect world, elected officials in democratic countries would make decisions in the public interest after considering issues objectively and impartially. This is how parliaments and other representative bodies are supposed to work. In reality, however, politicians around the world are subject to a range of influences and pressures that can distort the political process. One of the most persistent pressures is lobbying: the practice of seeking to influence legislation and other government decisions by those with an interest in the outcome.
Lobbying is an ancient art, because powerful people and groups have always had an incentive to manipulate official decisions in ways that are favourable to them.

Stonehenge
Learn the history of Stonehenge with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Five thousand years ago, at the same time as the pyramids were being constructed in Egypt, another monolithic structure was being built in the English county now known as Wiltshire. This structure, a complex series of earthworks and towering standing stones, is one of Europe's most famous prehistorical sites. But while we know quite a lot about who built the pyramids, and how and why they were constructed, we know very little about Stonehenge. Was it an astronomical observatory? A place of magic and ritual? A burial ground? A place of healing? The debate still rages.

Plantaganets
Learn about The Plantagenets with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The House of Plantagenet was a royal house of 15 monarchs who ruled England from 1154-1485.
The Plantagenets originally came from France, where they ruled a county called Anjou. They were a strange and powerful family, complex and prone to insanity. Their founder, Count Fulk III (known as “The Black”), had his wife burned at the stake in her wedding dress when he discovered she was sleeping with a goatherd. His great grandson, Geoffrey V gave the dynasty its name. The word Plantagenet comes from the name of a flower: plante genêt in French, or “common broom”. Geoffrey V was said to have worn a sprig of the golden flower in his battle helmet.

Bubonic plague is widely regarded as being responsible for two of the most infamous plagues in recorded history - the Black Death in the mid-fourteenth century and the great plague of London in 1665.
The causative organism of modern-day plague was discovered independently in 1894 by two bacteriologists: the Swiss born Dr. Alexandre Yersin and Dr. Shibasaburo Kitasato from Japan. Both were conducting research in Hong Kong during the third plague pandemic then occurring in Asia. Tragedy of the Commons
Learn about the Tragedy of the Commons with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The Tragedy of the Commons is a situation in which a jointly-owned resource is overused or destroyed because each person takes more than they would if the resource was privately owned. With each individual acting independently, the combined pressure on the resource exceeds what is in the interests of the community as a whole. The term was coined in 1967 by Garrett Hardin, a biologist from the University of California, in a famous article in the journal Science.
According to Hardin, there are some kinds of problems which society cannot resolve through technology, but which instead require a wholesale change in morality and behavior - what we might now call a cultural shift.

Learn about the Seven Wonders of the World with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
2,500 years ago, people began to talk about the wondrous structures they had seen in their travels around the Mediterranean. In 222 B.C., Philo of Byzantium wrote an essay called “On the Seven Wonders”. The historian Herodotus had made his list a few hundred years before. But it was Antipater of Sidon, a Greek poet, who brought the Seven Wonders to life in 120 B.C. Antipater lived during the Hellenistic age, when the culture of the ancient Greeks had spread throughout the Mediterranean. Seven was a mystical number to people of this era. And Antipater’s Seven Wonders soon became tourist shrines, much like the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower are today.

Learn about UFOs with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
On 25 June 1947, Kenneth Arnold, a United States Forest Service employee and private pilot, witnessed nine Unidentified Flying Objects in the sky near Mount Rainier, Washington. This incident was to mark the beginning of a rapid increase in public interest in UFOs. Arnold, who at the time was searching for a downed transport plane, originally thought the objects he saw were jets. However, on closer inspection, he realised the objects had no tails and all but one looked like flat disks. He later described the objects as being similar to saucers skimming across the surface of the water. This description was repeated by a journalist when reporting the story, and this is how the term "Flying Saucer" was coined.

Hemophilia
Learn about the condition of Hemophilia with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The term "hemophilia" describes hemorrhagic, or bleeding, disorders. The most common of these disorders is caused by a deficiency of Protein in the blood known as 'blood-clotting factor'. There needs to be at least 30% of the clotting factor for the blood to clot normally. Less than 30% results in the blood being slow to clot, causing bleeding for a longer time than someone with a regular amount of clotting factor.
Internal bleeding, usually into joints and muscles, is the most common form of bleeding sustained by those suffering from hemophilia. This can result from an incident such as a fall, or even spontaneously, with no apparent cause.

REM is an important component of sleep. But sleep itself is a difficult phenomenon to study, because it is such an insular process. Dreams in particular are highly elusive for the researcher of sleep. As dreaming is a "state of mind", theories concerning it are frustratingly convoluted and highly theory-based, with any advancement unlikely to be supported by hard evidence. However, what scientists can do is measure the physical reactions that take place in our bodies and by our bodies when we are sleeping. This helps us understand what happens to us when we sleep and what REM is all about.

Before the Great Fire, the City of London was filled with crowded, timber-framed buildings with thin, plaster walls. Candles, rushlights, coals and fireplaces were omnipresent, and the risk of fire was paramount.
The Great Fire of London is believed to have been started by the baker Thomas Farrynger shortly after midnight on Sunday, 2 September 1666, in his shop on Pudding Lane, just East of London Bridge. Within a few hours, the fire had spread rapidly, consuming Pudding Lane, Star Inn at Fish Street Hill and also part of Thames Street. For the next four days the fire raged, mercilessly consuming everything in its wake. Londoners were beside themselves trying to extinguish it.

The history of whaling is a fascinating look at international efforts to protect finite resources in international waters, otherwise known as common territory or commons.
While whaling can date back to 6000BC, large-scale whaling is thought to have commenced around the twelfth century, with the Basques who killed a large number of right whales in the Bay of Biscay. Despite very primitive modes of slaughter, using hand-held harpoons and man-powered boats, they were believed to have depleted the local whale stocks within a century.

The Council of Priests reviewed all the good works that Ptolemy had performed since acceding to the throne. They also decided that his services to Egypt merited extra honours to be paid to him in all major temples in Egypt. So, after this ceremony, the priests went about drafting a decree in which the good deeds of Ptolemy V and the extra honours to be paid to him were laid out.

For 350 years, from the late 15th century onwards, Europeans travelling by boat in the Mediterranean Sea were under constant threat of pirate attack. But these were not pirates as normally understood; rather, they were Muslim warriors officially sanctioned to plunder ships from Christian countries and kill or enslave anyone they found aboard.
The ships of the Barbary corsairs, as the pirates were known, were usually owned by the local ruler, or pasha, who granted the captain of each ship license to engage in piracy against ships from non-Muslim countries. Local merchants would also invest in corsair ships, which could be a source of handsome profits.

Andy Warhol came to public attention as one of the leading lights of the Pop Art movement of the 1960’s. Since then his art and legacy have polarised art critics and the public alike. This thin, pale, asexual man in a silver wig has been described as both a genius and a charlatan. His art, and maybe more importantly his approach to art, have taken him out of the galleries and museums into the public arena. Love or loath his work most agree that he broke down the divide between high art and mass culture.
Crucial to Warhol is this paradox: As an artist who approached art from its commercial perspective he pointed out how art is debased by money.

Blues music is a type of African-American folk music. It is concerned with expressing emotions through song. Generally, blues songs deal with tragic themes such as lost love, hardship, poverty and death. Indeed, the name "blues" comes from the emotions expressed in the songs themselves! However, blues songs are presented in a way to make audiences feel better about their own situation in life. This is because they encourage listeners to take control of their lives and move past any hardship. Due to this, blues music is very effective at connecting with its audience. This is best proved by Lead Belly, a famous US musician who was released from jail in 1925 due to his ability to sing the blues!

The Spanish Inquisition was a governing authority started by the crown in the late-fifteenth century. It was relentless in ensuring Catholic orthodoxy within Spain. But why was Spain so self-conscious in ensuring a singular religious identity?
Let's go back to the year 711. Muslim armies from North Africa successfully conquer much of the Iberian Peninsula, leaving only pockets of resistance in the North. There is Islamic rule in at least part of Spain for the most part of the next eight centuries.

Bay of Pigs
Learn about the Bay of Pigs invasion with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Bay of Pigs refers to the 1961 invasion of Cuba by a force of CIA-backed Cuban exiles attempting to overthrow Fidel Castro’s left-wing government. In Cuba the invasion is called the Battle of Girón, one of the beaches in the Bay of Pigs, which is on the south coast of Cuba. The invasion was one of the flashpoints of the Cold War and pushed the world towards the brink of nuclear war.
Cuba gained independence from Spain in 1898, but in the decades that followed, American business gained control of many industries and landholdings. Cuban governments, such as that of Fulgencio Batista, who effectively ruled from 1933 to 1958, were closely allied to the United States.

Seven Archangels
Learn about the Seven Archangels with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
The history of Angels rests predominantly in the Middle East. Other cultures had gods, goddesses or faeries, but in the Middle East they worshiped angels as their gods. Once the idea of a single all powerful God evolved, however, it was necessary to create another space for angels. And so, they became known as mediators between the newly created all powerful God and his servants –humankind- on Earth. The concept of angels was particularly native to Jewish and Babylonian culture.
The word angel comes from the Greek word for “messenger”.

Creationism
Learn about the theory of Creationism with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Creationism is the name given to the belief that God created the universe and everything in it, including life. In the West, the word is usually associated with the account of creation given in the book of Genesis in the Christian and Jewish bibles, but it can apply equally to the foundation stories of other religions, such as Islam and Hinduism. There are various forms of creationism, each associated with a different interpretation of scripture and with different views about its impact on current scientific thinking. The book of Genesis says that “in the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth”, and that the whole world was created in six days.

Geisha
Learn about the history of the Geisha with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Mystery and misconception surround the geisha. At first glance, she may appear to be rather average looking, heavily clad in a weighty costume and an excess of make-up. But behind this mask lies a range of artistic skills and social etiquettes of immense importance to Japanese culture past and present.
The most common place to find a geisha today is in Kyoto, the former capital of Japan before Tokyo –or Edo- took over. Even so, it is rare to see a real geisha walking the streets there. There are Japanese girls who look like geisha - wearing colorful kimonos with thick obis wrapped tightly around their waist, tottering along on pairs of wooden okobo.

The Nazca desert is a high plateau situated between the towns of Palpa and Nazca, which is 400 kilometres south of the Peruvian capital of Lima. The drawings are large outlines of creatures and plants, created by removing the red pebbles of the landscape to reveal the white earth underneath. What are left behind are striking white outlines of immense figures, best viewed from the air. The drawings include depictions of many animals, including hummingbirds, fish, monkeys, llamas and spiders.Perfect to listen to while commuting, exercising, shopping or cleaning the house.. iMinds brings knowledge to your MP3 with 8 minute information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

Learn about the discovery of Penicillin with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
When Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, it was a lucky accident. He didn’t realize at the time that penicillin would dramatically change the face of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
Fleming was a researcher studying the natural antibacterial substances produced by the body. He had been working with the bacteria that caused boils. To study the bacteria he grew colonies of it on plates. He later took a holiday leaving plates of bacteria to grow while he was away. On returning from his holiday, he noticed a mould growing on one of the plates. Colonies of the bacteria, which should have been growing around the mould, had died off.

Habeas Corpus
Learn about the principal of Habeas Corpus with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.
Habeas corpus is a Latin phrase which means 'have the body'. It is a legal writ, or order, that a court may make, requiring a prisoner to be brought before it so that the lawfulness of their detention may be determined. The fundamental principle behind the writ is that no-one should be detained without cause.
The origins of the writ are in English common law, and its use has been traced back to at least the early 1300s. Habeas corpus was adopted into the constitutions of many of the countries that incorporated English law, including the United States and Canada. As such it is often thought of as a constitutional guarantee against arbitrary detention.
